ISO standards provide requirements for accreditation, certification and self-declaration of conformance. Within these requirements are tools that organizations can use to not only implement the requirements but also as value-added tools for improvement. These tools include risk-based thinking, cause analysis and corrective action, internal audits, and management review.

This course will teach participants to look at standard requirements from a new perspective: looking at why the requirements exist, how the requirements are interrelated and how to leverage the tools within the requirements for a more robust management system, and overall business operations. The course takes a deep dive into the risk-based thinking tools within many ISO standards, as well as using internal audits and management reviews effectively.

The course is designed for Quality Managers, engineers and other contributors, to develop a culture of quality within their organization. It is also well-suited for personnel who want to strengthen their skills and understanding of the effective implementation of standard requirements.

Note, this is not an introduction to any specific standard. General requirements related to the learning objectives will be used to develop the concepts to apply to many ISO standards.

Participants will learn:

  • to effectively use risk based thinking tools, including where standards state “to the extent necessary”.
  • ways to create effective internal audit checklists and write nonconformities that will aid in efficient cause analysis
  • the difference and importance of both “correction” and “corrective action”
  • how to recognize the correct “problem” for the start of cause analysis and methods for in depth cause analysis, including expanded 5 whys with countermeasures.
  • how to select other published methods to assist in meeting requirements of ISO standards
  • how to use Management review meeting inputs and outputs to assist in strategic planning, assuring the management system aligns with organizational goals and promote continuous improvement
