ANAB Webinar: Let’s Talk Types of Audits

January 15 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm EST

In the context of auditing, there are several types of audits that may be performed. First and foremost, we need to understand what viewpoint we are taking as auditors. The auditor viewpoint can be defined by 1st, 2nd and 3rd party audits. 1st party audits are considered internal audits. Individuals from an organization, or hired by an organization, are looking at the organization from a 1st person perspective. 2nd party audits are also known as vendor or supplier audits, or customer audits. Individuals from outside the organization, but with a vested interest in the organization, perform the audits from a 2nd person perspective. Then, 3rd party audits are regulatory, certification or accreditation audits where the auditors have complete independence from the organization looking at the organization from a 3rd person perspective.

Aside from the viewpoint of the auditors, there are also different ways to perform audits, regardless if they are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd party audits. These include horizontal and vertical audits, document reviews, and remote or in-person audits. Many times, the different ways to perform audits are combined to create a more robust audit process.
