How to Achieve ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation

Where Do I Start?

We recommend reading MA 3033, Accreditation Manual for Forensic Service Providers, and reviewing the ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, ANAB requirements and other documents for the applicable program, and the flow chart below to begin the accreditation process.

ISO/IEC 17025 specifies the general requirements for competence to carry out tests/ and or calibrations, including sampling. It covers testing and calibration quality systems using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods.

ISO/IEC 17025 consists of five sections:

  • Scope
  • Normative References
  • Terms and Definitions
  • Management Requirements
  • Technical Requirements.

The two main sections are Management Requirements, which are primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the laboratory's quality management system, and Technical Requirements, which includes factors that determine the correctness and reliability of the tests and calibrations performed by the laboratory.

ANAB's forensic accreditation program requirements add forensic-specific requirement in areas where ISO/IEC 17025 is general.

The next step is to send email or call 414-501-5455, to begin discussions. You’ll find our employees very welcoming of inquiries and ready to help.

Determining your scope of accreditation is the next critical step. Your scope defines the specific tests and/or calibrations for which your organization will be accredited, and it helps us to determine the number of days needed for your on-site assessment. It’s not necessary to become accredited for all your organization’s capabilities, and it’s possible that the initial draft scope may not be your final scope of accreditation.
