FSSC 22000 FSMA Addendum Available
The FSSC 22000 Foundation has developed a voluntary FSMA Addendum to the FSSC 22000 scheme to help users share information required to support their supply chain program and to facilitate foreign and domestic supplier verification.
The FSMA Addendum identifies requirements specific to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Preventive Controls for Human Food rules that are not explicitly included in the FSSC 22000 scheme requirements so certified organizations can integrate the extra requirements into their food safety management systems.
Early gap analyses of FSSC 22000 against FSMA suggested that the FSSC 22000 scheme requirements are largely comparable to those of the Preventive Controls for Human Food rules. A subsequent in-depth analysis identified minor differences and the absence of specific legislative details. While FSSC 22000 published a FSMA Supplement in 2017 to be used as a self-assessment tool by certified organizations to help them understand the differences between their certified FSMS and the Human Food Rule requirements, the market has increasingly asked for third-party verification of the relevant FSMA requirements.
