US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – Children’s Toys Testing (SR 2425)

WHAT IS THE US CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION (CPSC) PROGRAM?

The CPSC Children’s Product Safety Testing Accreditation Program is a supplementary program to the ANAB’’s Testing Laboratory Accreditation Program. The CPSC Children’s Product Safety Testing Accreditation Program includes requirements addressing, among other things, lead, phthalates, toy safety, durable infant or toddler products, third-party testing and certification.

ABOUT THE CPSC PROGRAM

Laboratories that perform the testing activities identified in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 are required to be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by a recognized accreditation body, such as ANAB. Laboratories must have a scope of accreditation that identifies the specific children’s product testing requirement in question (or other mandated consumer products).

When ANAB issues a valid scope of accreditation for the applicable testing activities, the laboratory must register electronically with the CPSC to be accepted and listed on the CPSC website. ANAB offers accreditation under this program to all types of testing laboratories, including in-house (i.e., captive) laboratories. This specialty program is covered under the ANAB chemical, electrical, mechanical, and/or thermal fields of testing.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products – such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals – contributed significantly to the 30% decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.
